In a recent interview with Kikizo.com, Corporate VP of Microsoft Shane Kim tossed out another comment hinting at Microsoft’s intent to prove their worth in the handheld gaming genre. We all love the Zune and recently release Zune HD, but they aren’t what we expect from Microsoft in a gaming unit. Although The Xbox 360 is competing and succeeding against Sony’s PS3 and Nintendo’s Wii, it has nothing available to compete with the PSP or DS.
“For us, it’s a matter of focusing on ‘when,’” said Kim.
It is still undetermined as to when this could become a reality. However, we do know that Microsoft is working on their new updates and dashboard.
“If we chased after a mobile or handheld opportunity, we would not have the resources and ability to do things like instant-on 1080p HD, Facebook, Twitter, Project Natal. We’ve chosen to focus on the living room experience from a hardware standpoint, if you will, but we’re building a service in Live that will…will extend to other platforms.” he said.
In addition to all of this speculation, Microsoft alluded to how they could branch into the mobile phone arena.
“Do we do our own device, do we create our own phone–that’s a question for the company itself–do we continue to go down the Windows Mobile path, which is the path that we’re on today.” pondered Kim.
“With Natal, we’ve unveiled a vision for the future, and there’s a path to that future, but at the same time we’re trying to emphasise: there’s never been a better time to buy an Xbox 360 than today. We’ve got great core games, and we’re continuing to feed the core gamer that’s been so loyal to us.” he stated.
With all of this said, there is still no firm plan from Microsoft to properly invade mobile gaming. With big experiments ongoing with NATAL, and their updates to the Xbox Experience, I suspect this “project” won’t get a green light anytime soon. We’ll post new updates as they become available.
