BioShock 2 - philosophy and moral choices will return

Kotaku has an interview with BioShock 2 executive producer Alyssa Finley, which yields some info about the sequel’s tone and story.

Backstory: recall that in BioShock, utopian madman Andrew Ryan controls the underwater city of Rapture. Ryan’s unwavering belief in Rapture, in bettering himself and the citizenry (no matter the cost), ultimately lead to his downfall. He is a tragic villain of objectivism, in a sense.

According to Finley, BioShock 2 continues in a philosophical vein, but not necessarily with objectivism. After all, Andrew Ryan is gone:
“There has been a power play by other people who have other schools of thought have. That’s going to give us an opportunity to tell some different stories, show some different ideologies…Andrew Ryan built Rapture and it was built on the principals he espoused. This is not a story about Andrew Ryan, it’s a story about a city and what’s become of it.”

It appears Finley and crew plan to take BioShock 2’s themes into new areas beyond Ayn Rand, but where? Nietsche? Bring on the Ubermensche! In any case, it’s nice to see 2K Marin putting a lot of thought into the sequel’s story.
